Shaler is a Michigan native, but after being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in France she found herself an 'American in Paris'. Her complicated etchings are known internationally. They are mainly of the architecture of Paris, and the castles and historic homes in the countryside. The interiors evoke a sense of mystery with their empty rooms, half opened doors and lonely chairs. Ornate door knobs are a hallmark of her work. Shaler's etchings are found in many museum collections including the Victoria and Albert, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum and the Library of Congress. Jacob Fanning carries a full selection of her etchings, some dating back to 1985. |
